USA Today bestselling author Jennifer Blackstream unveils a new action-packed urban fantasy series…
As a witch with a dark past, Shade Renard knows the Otherworld isn’t always successful at policing itself. Humans don’t believe in magic anymore, and their ignorance renders them easy prey. So when an FBI contact hires her to consult on a possible haunting in a missing person case, Shade seizes the opportunity to see justice done.
The investigation takes an unexpected turn when an undead crime lord shows up on her doorstep. A bold thief stole the vampire’s little black book of secrets—and he’ll pay a lot more than an FBI consulting fee to get it back. To collect, Shade will have to confront a rogue sorceress—or two, a vengeful wizard, and a lethally seductive fey, with only her wits, her growing magic, and a sarcastic pixie familiar. Success means bringing a killer to justice and taking the first step to redemption. Failure means a war between humans and the Otherworld.
“The eye sees only what the mind is prepared to comprehend.”

Shade Renard has been an apprentice to Mother Hazel for a long time, how long she really did not know as most of her time was spent in betwixt and between where time didn’t truly exist. Now though, Shade has found herself assigned to a small town called Dresden where she was the local witch who was responsible for the town’s inhabitants. In addition to her witchy duties, Shade was determined to make up for the mistakes of her past by starting a private investigation business where she could “balance the scales” for the misdeeds of her youth.
Shade as a character was a perfect blend of experience and inexperience. She may have been an experienced witch but as a private investigator she really had no idea what she was doing but she went for it anyhow. It was hard to watch her make mistakes and stumble her way through some situations but I liked that she wasn’t “perfect” in her attempts. There is a lot of growth potential for this character and that makes me very excited for this series. In addition to a great main character, there were the other characters in this story and they were just perfect, with Peasblossom, Shade’s pixie familiar, being my favorite. She was fun and quirky and added a lot to the story.
Another thing that I enjoyed about this story was the world that it was set in. Part of it was set in a world that has village witches but with humans that either see magic or are blind to it, then there is the world inbetween this world where time has no meaning and witches are able to learn and practice their magic to their hearts content. It was so fun to imagine a place like that existing. I love the magic, witchy ways, and the twists and turns of the mystery that takes place in this story. Deadline is a urban fantasy that is filled with humor, suspense, and a smidge of maybe, possibly….romance, and I highly recommend! Deadline is a fantastic read!
