Six-year-old Lola Jade Harper is taken from her bedroom. Her mother is distraught. She is convinced her estranged husband, Gavin Harper, has abducted their daughter.

Detective Rachel Prince is leading the investigation but is soon out of her depth as she searches for the most high-profile missing child in the country. To uncover the truth about Lola’s disappearance, Rachel must untangle the Harper family’s complicated web of secrets and lies.

As the case progresses, the body of a local woman is found. The death at first seems unrelated, until a trail of social media posts lead Rachel to a chilling discovery.

And then another little girl is taken…

With growing pressure from the public and the appearance of someone from her past she’d rather forget, will Rachel be able to solve the connection between the two missing children and the murder - before it’s too late?

Truly addictive from start to finish, The Missing Child is a tense, enthralling crime thriller by one of the best new voices in crime fiction. Perfect for fans of Angela Marsons, Peter James and Karin Slaughter.

Previously called The Missing Child

What a great investigative mystery that The Lying Kind delivered! From the beginning I was invested in this case and not just because of the mystery of it all, even though that was such a draw for me. There was a great dynamic between all the characters in this story, especially between Detective Inspector Rachel Prince and her partner Detective Sargent Mark Brickall. They were a great duo and all the other characters involved had their job, they all just worked well together. There was no one giving anyone a hard time or trying to be a lone wolf. Everyone was focused on working towards solving the crimes and hopefully bringing Lola Jade Harper home alive.

I like Rachel Prince’s character but I do not love her, yet. As a detective she is absolutely amazing. I love how she used her natural intuition in conjunction with proper police procedures. She ran down ever clue and was not a lone wolf, she saw the value of bouncing ideas off other detectives. I thoroughly enjoyed her character professionally. I did not like how she avoided confrontation in her personal life. I can understand not wanting to deal with a situation but it just made no sense to me why she was so unwilling to deal with scenarios that are not that big of a deal in the grand scheme of things. I am hoping that this is a weakness that is turned into a strength throughout the series.

The Lying Kind is the first book in the Detective Rachel Prince series as well as being the first novel from debut author Alison James and what a great showing it was! I am looking forward to more from this author because from beginning to end I was all in trying to figure out what happened to Lola Jade Harper. There were red herrings thrown in and even though I was certain who was responsible I was not sure why or even how. When the reveal finally came my feeling was “you have to be kidding me.” I loved it! The Lying Kind is extremely similar to a police procedural but mixed with a thriller and some great detective fiction as well. I highly recommend this story!
