Syl Skye. Rouen Rivoche. Star-crossed lovers who should be mortal enemies. This is the story of how they met.

A nightly excursion to DC. A goth-rock show. One innocent train ride. That’s all it takes for high school sophomore Syl Skye’s perfectly normal world to come crashing down.

Because unbeknownst to her, she’s a sleeper-princess of the fair Fae—a vessel of Fae power that has yet to Awaken—and there are dark Fae who want her dead, dead, dead.

Rouen Rivoche is one of those dark Fae. Bound to Agravaine the dark Fae Huntsman who is dedicated to wiping out all sleeper-princesses, Rouen has no choice but to hunt Syl down and spill her blood.

But a chance meeting in a nightclub, a brush of their hands, a lingering look… Despite herself, Rouen is attracted to Syl. And when she lets Syl get away…that’s when their troubles really begin.

After all, every couple has their issues, right?

Find out how Syl and Rouen met in this new prequel novella to MORIBUND, Book 1 of The Circuit Fae...

Derailed is a prequel to Moribund in the Circuit Fae series and it definitely grabbed my attention and my imagination. Syl Skye is a high schooler who doesn’t quite fit in. She has her own style and doesn’t seem to care about what her group of friends care about, with the exception of violin sensation Euphoria. That is the one thing they can all agree on, she is awesome. Syl though, thinks she is beyond awesome, there is something about Euphoria that calls to her deep inside.

Syl knows that she is not really interested in boys. Although it is not something that she has actually acted on or discussed with anyone. Especially her best friend Fiann, who is more like a frenemy lately. In hopes to reignite their friendship they attend a Euphoria concert with some other gal pals but while there Fiann pulls her usual stunts and tries to use Syl as a wing lady with picking up some guys. Syl was tired of her BFF trying to set her up and she retreated from the craziness.

After a rather ugly confrontation with her supposed friends, Syl realizes that the concert is starting and she quickly heads in that direction, only to bump into someone. Someone who happens to be her heart crush, Euphoria, and there was something electric that passed between them. There was a connection that was felt by both of them and Euphoria made it known that she wanted to talk to Syl after the show.

Unfortunately, there was more going on than met the eye with Euphoria and no matter what her heart said she had to ignore her feelings. Euphoria was not free to do as she chose and to explore anything with Syl would only expose Syl to danger. Euphoria was bound to a dark fae and he had one use and one use only for Euphoria. She was to hunt that night, hunt for the sleeper-princess, and Euphoria hoped with all her heart that it was not the girl with the red hair that she couldn’t tear from her thoughts who she would have to kill that night.

While reading Derailed I was immediately drawn into Syl’s feelings. She wore her heart on her sleeve and she was conflicted about her relationship with her friends. She was not conflicted about her fascination with Euphoria and when her and Euphoria ran into each other, the writing detailed their awe and wonder of each other in such a way that it felt real. I also liked the twist with the circuitry and what it meant to be a circuit fae. I really felt Euphoria’s confliction regarding what she wanted to do versus what she had to do. Derailed was wonderfully written and expressive story that absolutely snagged my interest and is a great prequel for this series!
