Wickedly sinful, the Earl of Sussex, is an unrepentant rake. And the Wicked Earls' Club is the perfect place for a man of his station to indulge in life. That is until his parents make a match for him. Travelling to meet his intended bride, he is convinced he must end this farce. Until he meets Lady Tabitha. A fiery wallflower equally bent on ending their engagement.
Lady Tabitha, daughter or the duke, will not be betrothed to a rake no matter what her father thinks of his social connections. As long as she doesn't stare into the depths of his green eyes, or linger on the strong lines of jaw, she should be able to scheme her way out of this engagement. That is, if her intended groom would just cooperate in her plans.
This story starts with Luke Bentley, the Earl of Sussex, thinking that he is a lucky man. He is a known rake and rather proud of it. He is also a key carrying member of the Wicked Earl’s Club, a gentlemen’s club where naughty things take place and men can indulge in their vices with impunity, and he has no wish for things to be any different. Unfortunately, his parents did not feel the same way and they decided that enough was enough, that it was high time that Luke settled himself down and started considering things like a wife and future heirs. Luke was never going to give them what they wanted on his own, so his Father took matters into his own hands and made a match for Luke.
Luke was furious when he learned of his father’s machinations and was completely committed to finding a way out of the marriage contract. Luke knew of Lady Tabitha Riley, knew that she was considered a wallflower and he figured that since he never noticed her that she must be foul looking indeed. His curiosity got the better of him so he decided that he needed to at least meet Tabitha in person to see what she was like. What Luke never expected was that the intended bride would be passionately against the marriage, even more than he was, that she would also be beautiful and stir his body in ways he had not anticipated! He had come with the intentions of finding a way out of this marriage only to find himself captivated with his intended.
Tabitha may have found the Earl dashingly handsome, that was nothing new, but she would not be swayed by his good looks. It was too bad that he never bothered to pay attention to her and the last thing that she wanted was to be married to a rake. She knew that he would cast her off as soon as he lost interest and that would leave her forced to endure a lifetime of embarrassment. That was not going to happen, Tabitha was straightforward with Luke and asked him to help her find a way to sabotage their intended marriage. Luke was surprised but he did not want to get married either, so he fully intended to cooperate with her schemes. That was until he became certain about what it was that he really wanted with Lady Tabitha. Then it was just a matter of trying to get Tabitha to change her mind, which was proving to be a hard task indeed.
What a great series starter the Earl of Sussex was! Truly delightful! I enjoyed both Luke and Tabitha’s characters but honestly Tabitha was my favorite! Good for her that she wanted control over her choices and good for her that she was not afraid to look out for her best interests. Her character made the story quite enjoyable. Something I wish had been more thoroughly explained though was that there was a character that worked behind the scenes to introduce the idea of a match between Luke and Tabitha and I wish that had been better explained in this story. What was the motivation and why? I am hoping that character will make an appearance in the next book in this series and their motivation will be explained then because they were an interesting character. Overall, the Earl of Sussex was a swoony historical romance that I definitely recommend!
