Members of an Egyptian expedition fall victim to an ancient mummy's curse in a thrilling Veronica Speedwell novel from the New York Times bestselling author of the Lady Julia Grey mysteries.
London, 1888. As colorful and unfettered as the butterflies she collects, Victorian adventuress Veronica Speedwell can’t resist the allure of an exotic mystery—particularly one involving her enigmatic colleague, Stoker. His former expedition partner has vanished from an archaeological dig with a priceless diadem unearthed from the newly discovered tomb of an Egyptian princess. This disappearance is just the latest in a string of unfortunate events that have plagued the controversial expedition, and rumors abound that the curse of the vengeful princess has been unleashed as the shadowy figure of Anubis himself stalks the streets of London. But the perils of an ancient curse are not the only challenges Veronica must face as sordid details and malevolent enemies emerge from Stoker’s past. Caught in a tangle of conspiracies and threats—and thrust into the public eye by an enterprising new foe—Veronica must separate facts from fantasy to unravel a web of duplicity that threatens to cost Stoker everything. . . .
A Treacherous Curse is the third book in the Veronica Speedwell Mystery series and I am very happy that it won’t be the last! Especially with how this book ended! In this story both Veronica and Stoker have come to terms, for the most part, with their disappointment that their scheduled expedition was cancelled due to the Earl of Rosemorran having hurt himself when he tripped over his tortoise. Even though they weren’t leaving the country in search of unfound treasures, they have found a way to occupy themselves. Veronica and Stoker were keeping busy by organizing the numerous artifacts and acquisitions that the Earl and his predecessors have acquired over the years in order to show them in a museum setting.
While Veronica and Stoker may have not been able to go on their expedition there was an expedition that was making headlines in London. This was the Tiverton Expedition and it was the talk of the town due to the supposed curse that was affecting those on the expedition while in Egypt. There had already been one death attributed to the curse as well as supernatural sightings and the public was going wild to learn more details. Details that would come to affect Stoker personally as he had a past connection to two members of the expedition and their past was an ugly affair. It also appeared that the reporter making the headlines had no shame as they were dragging what little reputation Stoker had managed to rebuild through the mud due to an incident with Stoker and the missing man that had occurred a year before.
If Stoker was going to salvage what was left of his already tarnished reputation then it was going to be up to him and Veronica to get to the bottom of the mystery surrounding the missing man from Stoker’s past. Although that was a task that was easier said than done because there was a great emotional cost for Stoker attached to this endeavor. He was going to have to face a part of his past that he had run from for many years. While confronting Stoker’s past Veronica would also learn a few things that would not only surprise her but also give her more insight into Stoker himself. As they tackle Stokers dark and twisted past they also find themselves faced with supernatural sightings, the attempted murder of both Stoker and Veronica, as well as the curse that appears to have followed the expedition from Egypt to London.
What really initially drew me to this book was the plot involving an Egyptian curse. In addition to the curse, mystery, and adventure, I really enjoyed reading A Treacherous Curse because of the changes that occurred in the relationship between Veronica and Stoker. Veronica finally put her foot down about a few things between her and Stoker and I think that Stoker himself may have reached the point where he can move on from his past. I am not for sure on that, I will have to wait for the next book in the series, but I was really happy where things ended. The mystery kept me fully engaged and even though I figured out parts of the mystery before they were revealed, it was still a wonderful story to read. A Treacherous Curse was an exciting and entertaining read that will be a delight to fans of this series. I highly recommend this book and this series!
