Three years ago, London society changed forever, with a revolution placing the widowed Queen firmly on the throne her blue blood husband tried to take from her. Humans, verwulfen and mechs are no longer considered the lesser classes, but not everybody is happy with the new order…

Entire families have gone missing in the East End. When Caleb Byrnes receives an invitation to join the Company of Rogues as an undercover agent pledged to protect the crown, he jumps at the chance to find out who, or what, is behind the disappearances. Hunting criminals is what the darkly driven blue blood does best, and though he prefers to work alone, the opportunity is too good to resist.

The problem? He’s partnered with Ingrid Miller, the fiery and passionate verwulfen woman who won a private bet against him a year ago. Byrnes has a score to settle, but one stolen kiss and suddenly the killer is not the only thing Byrnes is interested in hunting.

Soon they’re chasing whispered rumors of a secret project gone wrong, and a monster that just might be more dangerous than either of them combined. The only way to find out more is to go undercover among the blue blood elite… But when their hunt uncovers a mysterious conspiracy, Byrnes and Ingrid must set aside their age-old rivalry if they have any chance at surviving a treacherous plot.

Oh my, oh my, I love this book, Mission: Improper, and I am beyond excited about reading the rest of this series! The London Steampunk: The Blue Blood Conspiracy series is set in the same world as the Author’s London Steampunk series and I will admit that, for this story, I was referring back to the original series in order to refresh my memory as to who the characters in this series were. Make no mistake though, in order to enjoy Mission: Improper, knowing the characters in the other series was not necessary but because I was aware of them I wanted to remember them fully. I will also say that despite the naming of the series, this book had little to do with steampunk outside of a few people being mechs.

Mission: Improper is a great romance that is blended well with a twisted and dark mystery. I loved the backstory between the main characters Ingrid Miller and Caleb Byrnes, it was hilarious!! For over a year Caleb has been waiting to get his revenge on Ingrid and when he realized that Ingrid had been invited to be a part of the same covert agency as himself and others he thought his time had finally arrived. What he never expected was that Ingrid would be able to get so deeply under his skin that his thoughts of revenge quickly turned into something more amorous and that terrified him. He was a rogue blue blood and he prided himself on his ability to control his emotions and hungers and to be feeling instable because of a woman was unacceptable to him. But she was also an enigma and a challenge, so he just couldn’t leave her alone, even though he should have.

Ingrid was a verwulfen in a society where many still considered her kind vermin especially blue bloods. Despite everything Ingrid was a fiery and passionate individual and she had developed quite a reputation for being able to track down criminals. When she was invited to join a covert agency that was formed in an effort to protect the new queen and ferret out any potential attacks that were being planned against her, she jumped at the chance. That was until she realized that she was to be paired with Byrnes, then she was not so sure, but the lure of money was too much to ignore. Ingrid had goals and in order to bring them to fruition she needed money. So, she reluctantly agreed to partner with Caleb. She didn’t want to be near Byrnes because she was afraid he would see revenge for an incident from a year ago and because he caused her to lose her cool.

Both Caleb and Ingrid were both strangers to the emotions swirling inside of them and it made them both uncomfortable. The dance they shared around their emotions was a nice smoldering romance. As an investigative team, they had a great chemistry and I enjoyed them running down the clues and trying to piece together the puzzle of who was snatching people and why. The cast of characters in Mission: Improper was just spot on! I loved each one of them and liked what they brought to the table. I also am psyched about the overarching plot that will be carried through to the next book in this series! It was very hard for me to not snatch up the next book and start reading it immediately. I am such a sucker for romance and I always love the romance elements in a Bec McMaster story. Mission: Improper was a fast-paced mystery with the type of smoldering romance that gets my heart all twitterpated, if you are considering reading this book I say that you absolutely should!

About Bec McMaster

Author Bec McMaster

My name is Bec McMaster and I live in a small country town in Australia with my boyfriend, a noisy cockatiel, and a beautiful dog named Kobe. I grew up either with my nose in a book or writing, and never understood why other people didn’t get to watch ‘all the movies in their heads’. Following a lifelong love affair with fantasy, I discovered romance at the age of sixteen and haven’t looked back.

When I’m not writing I like to read, obsess over food blogs and my attempts at recreating their masterpieces, go hiking with my boyfriend, pore over travel brochures, and go to the gym. I’m addicted to travel, and love to set my books in foreign places. It’s the next best thing to traveling there. One day I vow to see the entire world, whether it’s by plane, paper, or imagination.

These days I can be found sitting at my computer with a hot mug of tea, possibly some chocolate (okay, definitely some chocolate) creating the dark and dangerous worlds of the London Steampunk, Dark Arts or Burned Lands series’ where even the darkest hero can find love. I’m a member of RWA (USA and Australia), and am represented by Jessica Faust of BookEnds; LLC.
