KateI had a great life. A great job, and the best friends a girl could ask for. The only thing missing? Adam. That all changed in an instant. How was I supposed to be a mother to my best friends kids without feeling like I was replacing her? How was I supposed to live in a house with Adam without wanting him?I didn't know, but what I did know, we would have to work together if we were going to give those kids the best Christmas ever.
AdamMy life was complete shit. I lost my job the day I lost my leg. What did I gain? Horrible nightmares and a drinking problem. The only light in my life was my best friends and their kids. That was until the crash. I had a new set of problems in the form of four grieving kids and the love of my life. Kate. What would she see when she looked at me? I hoped I never found out.
I loved that this story, Christmas for the Byrds, was able to take a tragic event that occurred before the holidays and still managed to keep some of the Christmastime feel to it. My heart was shattered for all the characters in this story. As a mom, my heart was torn for these children who had lost their parents so suddenly. As a best friend, I was gutted for the loss of Kate & Adam’s best friends and then the ginormous task of instant parenthood. For me this story was full of the feels as I was emotionally connected with the story from page one. I also enjoyed the unique Christmas ideas that the characters incorporated to help the children through their first Christmas without their parents.
Kate and Adam were once lovers but they parted amicably many years ago because their lives were going in two different directions. As they shared best friends, they were co-guardians for the children, so they had to grapple with their grief of losing their friends while managing to co-parent children who were also hurting. At first the kids were staying with Kate because she couldn’t handle the idea of going back to the house filled with memories while Adam was helping out with getting the kids to and from school. That was not an ideal situation though and once they met with the attorney who was handling the estate they were informed that their friends intended for them to all live together in the parents’ house.
Neither Kate nor Adam wanted to move into the house but they realized that they were being selfish and it was probably best for the children to be in a familiar environment. With the decision made they all moved back into the house, which was a little awkward for Adam and Kate. Although they were no longer in a relationship, neither Adam nor Kate had ever lost their attraction to each other. Not knowing if the other person shared the same attraction had them doing some side stepping at first. Although, once a move was made it was full steam ahead for this couple as they accepted this new life that they never dreamed of but welcomed with open arms.
I loved that there was a nod in this story to Griffin from the Author’s Pride and Honor series. I also loved that I was able to emotionally connect with this plot from the start. I just kept imagining what if that was me or my kids, heart wrenching to even consider. Now, the romance between Kate and Adam has heat and there was a good backstory to support their relationship so that it did not feel like insta-love but I felt that it needed to be more developed to really grab me. It was believable but I just wasn’t as interested in them and I was everything else. Overall though, Christmas for the Byrds was a fabulous story that definitely made me think and made my heart happy!
