Miss Permilia Griswold may have been given the opportunity of a debut into New York high society, but no one warned her she wasn't guaranteed to "take." After spending the last six years banished to the wallflower section of the ballroom, she's finally putting her status on the fringes of society to good use by penning anonymous society gossip columns under the pseudonym "Miss Quill."
Mr. Asher Rutherford has managed to maintain his status as a reputable gentleman of society despite opening his own department store. While pretending it's simply a lark to fill his time, he has quite legitimate reasons for needing to make his store the most successful in the country.
When Permilia overhears a threat against the estimable Mr. Rutherford, she's determined to find and warn the man. Disgruntled at a first meeting that goes quite poorly and results in Asher not believing her, she decides to take matters into her own hands, never realizing she'll end up at risk as well.
As Asher and Permilia are forced to work together and spend time away from the spotlight of society, perhaps there's more going on behind the scenes than they ever could have anticipated. . . .
Behind the Scenes is a series starter for the Apart from the Crowd series. I was first turned onto Author Jen Turano’s work with the A Class of Their Own series and when I learned that she had a new series starting, I was very excited to start reading. Took me a bit of time to start reading Behind the Scenes but it is just adorable and I found it witty and charming! This is a laugh-out-loud clean romance that was a delight from start to finish.
Miss Permilia Griswold was a unique woman who was skilled in the knowledge of sword play, fire arms, and the business of mining. What she was not skilled in was being a woman forced into high society and it was for her failures at decorum that Permilia had been deemed a ‘wallflower.’ It was while using her wallflower status for her own gains that Permilia overheard a plot of murder that had its focus on Mr. Asher Rutherford. Permilia knew of Asher Rutherford because of two separate occasions where she had argued and bargained with the man. Although she had little acquaintance with him outside of that, she could not fail to warn him of what she had overheard.
Permilia had made an impression on Asher on the occasions he had come across her. During the party that they were attending was no different. There was just something about her that he found most frustrating and alluring. When she came to him about overhearing a plotting of his murder though, he failed to take her seriously…at first. When it soon became apparent to Asher that there was indeed some credence to what Permilia tried to warn him of, it was almost too late. Luckily Permilia was there in the knick of time to provide assistance. Hilarious! It became quite clear to Asher that Permilia was a woman who was more than she appeared and that maybe he should reevaluate his opinion of her.
As Asher and Permilia worked together to try and solve the mystery of who was behind the plot to murder Asher, they both became aware that there was more between them than they had ever expected to be. Even though they argued almost incessantly and had different views on a woman’s role in marriage and in life, they could not deny that there was a spark of something more between them. As the danger increased for both these characters so too did the realization that maybe what they both needed in life was right in front of them all along.
I am a big fan of Jen Turano’s stories and Behind the Scenes was no exception! I loved all of the characters in this story. I especially loved the addition of Pinkerton detectives, lol, that was a fun addition. The characters were all delightful, charming, and unique. The situations that Permilia and her friend Gertrude found themselves in were nothing short of hilarious. There is a definite Christian element in this story but it is nothing too “preachy” or in your face. Behind the Scenes was a quick and fun read that kept me thoroughly entertained!
