Black eyes. No emotion. No sympathy. Only emptiness.
Piper McAdams’s life was normal. Career? Check. Boyfriend? Check. Friends? Check. One unsettling run in with a homeless man turns everything from normal to terrifying. She begins seeing…things.
Things she can’t seem to explain or make any sense.
As if things aren’t already getting out of hand, Piper receives news that the only family member she has is dead. She thinks maybe a trip across the country to her hometown will get her away from all the strange events happening.
After a late night accident, Piper isn’t in her hometown burying her loved one. She’s in a town called Hell. All she wants to do is leave, but the people seem to be holding her there for some reason.
A reason she feels threatens her life. Around every corner things become darker and scarier.
Can she escape what is coming for her?

I will freely admit to being a pussycat when it comes to anything horror but I still can’t help wanting to read it. I gave Chosen a five-star rating because for me it gave me all sorts of feels. Feelings like horrified, grossed out, stricken just to name a few, and the ending was as a horror book should end. The first chapter had me running upstairs to snuggle my kids because I wanted them close. It is during this chapter that you get to know the main character, Piper McAdams, as a child. For the love is all I can say to this chapter because as sad as her situation was it is a reality for some children today and that made me want to hold my kids close.
Then next chapter is the present-day transition and it is also where the action starts to take place. When Piper travels back to Alabama to bury a relative the story takes a definite turn. I loved how the details were brought in slowly and inserted in a non-threatening way, until they were suddenly very threatening. I of course would have trusted no one but Piper was grief stricken and was not at the top of her game. As the story moves on and develops, the history behind the occurrences that have been plaguing Piper starts to untangle. I was both repulsed and intrigued at the same time. The villain of the story is absolute evil but he also had his seductive side. Ugh, such a good read but ugh!! Ha ha ha!
Of course, for anyone who reads horror books, we know that we like to think “why didn’t the character just leave by doing this…” or something along those lines. I did like that Piper’s character commented on her own foolishness when she made a stereotypical mistake. There were plenty of twists in this story and a few “say it isn’t so…” moments. Overall, Chosen was a freaky read that left me horrified but satisfied. After reading this story I wouldn’t say that I needed to keep the lights on but it was a nice blending of horror and fantasy and absolutely would be a book that I would recommend to anyone looking for a bit of a freaky read.
