In a standalone hockey romance that tugs at readers’ heartstrings, a broken ex-pro learns to live and love again—all thanks to the complicated, wonderful nurse who gives him a second chance.
Brianna Collins needs to break away from her overbearing family. Her parents expect her to “fix” her brother after a series of concussions derailed his hockey career. Unfortunately, no doctor will give him clearance to play, and she’s finished with being the person they rely on to perform a miracle that will never happen. For Bree, a six-month nursing assignment at a hospital in Charlotte, North Carolina, is the perfect escape.
Luke Daniels, former forward for the NHL’s Charlotte Aviators, has spent close to a year rehabbing a career-threatening injury—and distracting himself however he can. Worlds collide when Luke realizes that the girl from his latest one-night-stand happens to be the new nurse at the hospital where he volunteers in the pediatric unit. What’s more, Bree’s the only person who makes him excited about life again.
Despite her initial reservations, Luke can’t help pursuing sweet, beautiful Bree. Then he realizes it was her brother whose career he ended with an accidental hit, and he falls back on the thing that’s always helped suppress his demons: alcohol. But if Luke doesn’t kick his old habits, he just may lose the one thing he loves more than hockey.

I don’t know why but I usually end up reading sports romances that revolve around hockey, which is ok with me because…hello….hockey players people. In Breakaway, Luke Daniels has had his world shattered in a moment. Everything he ever wanted was just..poof…gone. His childhood had given him the skills to rise against the odds and he was determined to prove everyone wrong and seize his future, despite the odds.
Brianna Collins was looking for a break from the life she grew up with. Always one to want to help those who are hurting, Bree left behind everything to work as a traveling nurse who specializes as a pediatric oncology nurse. Determined to have fun for her short stay in Charlotte, North Carolina, she went out with a co-worker for a night of fun and while out she ran in Luke.
Bree was looking for a good time and Luke looked like a good time to her. She wanted a fun night of no strings attached action and her sights were set on Luke. Luke was definitely thrilled that Bree was interested in him but he wanted to make sure that she was not just some puck bunny looking for a way to weasel herself into a good situation and he quickly pumped the brakes on what Bree was looking for. Just not successfully because he was more than interested and his will was paper thin when it came to her.
Even though Bree made it very clear, like crystal, that she was not looking for anything beyond friends with benefits, which was smoking hot times my friends, Luke could not help but want more. Bree was his dream woman and as he learned more about her, painstakingly so, he was more convinced that there was not a more perfect woman for him. He just needed Bree to see what he was seeing. That they were a perfect match for each other.
What a sweet romance Breakaway was!! There is an emotional component to this story that just had me hanging on and I did not want to stop reading it. There were humorous times as well as some difficult moments. I will warn you that the first half of the book is all about the sex, remember that Bree only wanted friends with benefits moments, but as the story goes on there are a few twists and a slow change that takes place which lands the book at a really sweet ending. It may not be for everyone’s tastes but I liked Breakaway.
