SUGAR, SEA SALT, AND SHOW BIZ
Jen Reid's life after walking off a reality show has been great--she's gone from being a broke twenty-four-year-old Seattleite with no love life and no job to the twenty-five-year-old who got the guy, moved to Miami, and is starting a bakery with her best friend. She thinks her showmance love might be about to propose. And with mouthwatering goodies based on everyone's favorite shows, her business, Sweet Reality, is destined for success.
That is, until a killer competitor opens right across the street. If she's going to save Sweet Reality, Jen has to come up with a secret ingredient--like the recipe that won Totally 80s Bake-Off. Jen can get it--if she steps back into the spotlight. Soon she and her boyfriend are out to sea on a cruise ship full of reality stars, including her nemesis, Ariana; her lying, cheating ex; and some wicked producers looking to bring the drama. Separate cabins, "surprises" from her past, and scenarios tailor-made to spark fights are just the beginning. But with her self-respect, her business, and her future on the line, the fallout from this made-for-TV plotline will be all too real . . .
Sweet Reality is the second book in the Reality Star series. This story takes place about a year after the end of the first book, America’s Next Reality Star. The sweetheart couple from that book, Jen and Justin, have successfully transitioned from on-screen flirting to a full-blown romance.
Now things are moving in a serious direction. Jen has moved from Seattle to Florida with the plan of using her winnings to invest in a bakery with Justin’s sister, Sarah. Sarah and Jen have grown very close since Jen and Justin were featured on the T.V. reality show, The Fishbowl. I thought that the positive relationship between Sarah and Jen was really nice and their interactions were a hoot.
Jen and Justin had been contacted by the network about an upcoming cruise for previous reality T.V. stars and Jen and Justin thought that a week-long all expenses paid cruise sounded like exactly what they needed. Once aboard the ship they were in for a few surprises, some that were good, but others that were very bad. It appeared that Jen and Justin’s relationship was going to be put to the ultimate test.
I had read the first book in this series and it was nice that some of the previous characters were included in this story. It helped move the story along because the relationships were already developed, allegiances were already cemented, and lines were already drawn between Jen and her nemesis, Ariana. Since the story already had a great platform it left plenty of room for humor, romance, betrayals, and drama….drama…..drama.
Well, this was a story about reality T.V. stars, there was supposed to be plenty of drama. Which there was, but it was blended quite well with the other elements so you didn’t get fed up with any one thing. There are some outlandish scenes but they come off more as funny than anything. There was tension and conflict but there is also a surprising resolution with a bit of a heart touching moment between two surprising characters.
Sweet Reality is an amusing story that is fast-paced, loaded with characters you will love, and has a few that you will love to hate. Plan on having some belly laughs and maybe even an eye-roll or two. What you won’t do is regret reading this story. It is definitely a great addition to the Reality Star series and I look forward to seeing where things go for the main characters. This is a good read.
