The interplanetary gates have existed between the five planets and the Netherworld for as long as living memory.
Dr. Elisabeth Avery is a woman caught between two worlds. Little does she know that others like her, other half-breeds, are being hunted. When a creature drags a princess into the Netherworld, Elisabeth is determined to save her by any means necessary.
Meanwhile, on the planet of Hystera, a Keeper and his assistant investigate a grisly string of suicides and are in need of someone with Elisabeth's skills. The Gate Guardians and Elisabeth are aware that something is coming and know that it has something to do with the Netherworld bleeding through to the planets, but not why.
Will Elisabeth be able to come to terms with who she is in time to face the coming threat?
I recently read the prequel to The Sixth Gate, The Gate Guardian’s Daughter, and was pumped about reading this story. This is not a fantasy read that involves only two main characters, there is an expansive world development going on in this book. There are different worlds with its own race and guardians, as well as a Netherworld that has unbelievable creatures with its own royalty. Remarkable!
The main story is about Dr. Elisabeth Avery who is half human and half demon. Specifically, she is half Soul Collector but she has never truly experienced her demon side. She is also a very powerful seer. Elisabeth chooses to deny her other half as well as her latent powers and strives to live her life as “human” as possible. She has for so long lived a pretty mundane life with plenty of demons around to protect her. Although it has been rather lonely, she was comfortable with her life.
Until one day when her world was turned upside down by a failed assassination attempt. It wasn’t that someone tried to assassinate her, because it was not the first time, but that her assassin was so insistent that he finish the job he started. He had a mission and ending her life was that mission. He just needed to wait until her soul was stained enough that he could collect it. Elisabeth was confident that was not going to happen. She had gone this long without her demon side slipping free and she was not going to start now.
When the seers from all the surrounding planets were assassinated it comes down to Elisabeth to decide if she is going to leave her sheltered life behind in order to help those in desperate need of a seer. She will have to travel to the Netherworld where her demon side will be the strongest and she will have to risk being called to the dark side. With only the aid of her would be assassin, turned bodyguard, who was adamant that no one was going to kill her but him, Elisabeth will have to come to terms with herself as a whole in order to save those she loves from the greatest threat they have ever faced.
This was such an exciting read. Each chapter covers a new event and you do not follow around a set of characters. In some cases, the character you were following might not come around again for several chapters. You read the story as the events occur and on the planets they occur on. That may come off a tad confusing to some readers but I really enjoyed it. It keeps the story moving and you get to be fully immersed in different worlds.
The writing is vivid and you can clearly see the scene as the Author intended. I would gush and gush about my favorite scenes but I hate to spoil anything for you. It was just lovely to read! Now I have to mention the ending. The story wraps up and the ending is satisfying but there is a bit of a cliff-hanger. Not the kind where the story just stops but it sets the series up wonderfully for the sequel to this story. I will personally be waiting with baited breath for the continuation of this story. Soooo good!
