Justin DeWeese had spent his life living in the shadows. As the runt of his family he had been an outcast. Once he left them behind he figured he’d always live a life of solitude. No mate would want a runt, no pack would either. His dream of owning a horse stable one day seemed hopeless without his trust fund money. Working odd construction jobs wasn’t making him any richer either.
When he ended up at the Kamp bar down on the outskirts of New Orleans he found more. Justin found a pack that accepted him. When a local rich man needed a new stable manager he found his dream job, and so much more.
Veronica Miller just graduated grad school, and planned on spending the summer working for her parent’s stable. She was happiest around her horses, and was looking forward to a calm summer before the real world started. The new stable manager was making her anything, but calm. With a body that made her drool, and dark eyes that seemed to be made just for her.
Justin’s past comes to haunt them in more ways than one. Veronica finds that she’s no longer a girl who will stand by when she sees what she wants. She may not know a lot about being a mate, but she knows she knows that she’s Justin’s and she won’t let him get away. Together they have to find a path that fits both of them, in the middle of chaos meant to tear them apart.
Growth of the Bear is the third book in the Bear Kamp series and I just loved this book! Justin is a member of the Kamp pack lead by Alpha bear-shifter Austin. Justin had always been one of the meeker bear shifters due to the abusive family he came from. He is not a pushover by any means but he was the runt of his family and they were very unkind to him as such. It has left Justin with a negative view of what he is able to do or his value to others.
The one thing that Justin always had to help him through the tough times were horses. Growing up he was able to work at the family stable and it always calmed him. It was very unusual that a shifter could be that close to livestock without them freaking out but Justin was different than the others. Now he is living out the dream as he landed a job managing the Miller Family Stables for local rancher, Jerry Miller. It was a small operation but Justin was up for the task. He was going to have two employees to start and that was fine with him. As a shifter, he could do the work of more than one person.
Jerry had explained to Justin that one of his workers, Roni, had recently graduated college, would be coming back to work for the summer, and that Roni was a good worker. Little did Justin know that Roni was actually short for Veronica. Veronica who just happened to be Jerry’s daughter. A daughter that Justin found extremely sexy and attractive. It made his bear sit up and take notice immediately. This was a whammy for Justin because everyone knows that the boss’s daughter is always off limits but try telling that to his bear.
It also happens that Roni finds that Justin is not too hard on the eyes either. She attended college with a few shifters but she did not have any close relationships with them that would help her in her current situation. She felt that Justin found her attractive and there was sexual tension between them but he was always putting on the breaks. It was tough on Roni but at the same time ok because she was not really sure what she wanted with him, well beyond a good time that is.
When there were some suspicious activity happening at the stable Justin quickly realized that his family was after him for nefarious reasons. Somehow his family had also learned of his feelings for Roni and were out to harm her in order to get to him. Justin and Roni had to work together in order to put a stop to the danger the stable was in. It would destroy the boundaries between the them and in the end Justin would finally understand that although he may have been the runt of his family, he was never the weak one.
The romance and tension in this story is steamy. I loved the interactions between Justin and Roni. It was sweet, romantic, and really a great happily ever after for the both of them. I enjoyed the inclusion of the mystery elements because it gave it a bit of suspense. I love that this series also includes the characters from the previous books. It gives it a feeling of camaraderie with all of the characters, a real pack feel. Growth of the Bear is also my favorite book in this series so far. I am looking forward to the next installment and cannot wait to see where things go from here. I highly recommend not only this book but the series as well!
