For Elea, there’s never been a better time to turn away from witch life. The Tsar is in exile. The Vicomte is dead. And Rowan? Falling for him only broke her heart. Instead of casting spells, Elea spends her days running Braddock Farm and enjoying the flirtations of the very handsome and non-magical Philippe. Everything is going perfectly, except for one problem.
Someone’s trying to kill her.
Shujaa is a Changed One, a Creation Caster mage whose mutated form makes him invincible in battle. Now that the Tsar and Vicomte are gone, Shujaa wants to rise and rule. To do so, he must eliminate all those powerful enough to oppose him, and Elea is top on his list. Anyone who offers her aid quickly ends up dead.
In the end, there’s only one person who can keep Elea safe while helping her defeat Shujaa: Rowan. Like it or not, Elea must team up with her old love. With Philippe along for the ride, Elea plans to team with Rowan without losing her heart this time. But that’s when all her plans fall apart…

Starting a series on the third book is not the easiest thing to do. The Author did a fantastic job of including backstory details that helped me to clearly understand what had happened in the previous stories so that I would clearly understand the impact of current events. Cherished is the type of book that you can easily read and gather a true understanding of the characters and their motivation. I think to truly get all the emotional feels from the relationship between Rowan and Elea you would have needed to be there from the beginning. To be a part of the romance.
Elea has gone back to her roots in Cherished. She has given it all up, magic included. She was bound and determined to make a life as a farmer. Too bad she hates that life. Well, it is not the farming that she dislikes, it is that she was a Grand Mistress Necromancer, able to raise the dead, animate skeletons, and cast spells. Now she is a farm girl and being around non-magical people is proving to be more of a challenge than she ever thought it would be. Things would probably have gone easier for her if her traitorous heart would stop beating for Rowan.
Rowan was her friend, her confidant, the one person that she could depend on. Oh wait, that is until he dropped the bombshell that he was secretly engaged to her best friend. Hmmm, game changer! What?! Unable to even begin to deal with that concept is what had sent Elea back to the land, her birthright, that her parents had left to her. Can’t say I would blame her, at all, but she should have given Rowan a chance to explain. Not everything was as it appeared.
Now forces are conspiring and Elea is under attack from a new source but she has no true idea of whom she can trust. It seems that everyone is out to use Elea for their own gain but it is clear that Elea must return to Rowan’s side. Hmm, that almost sounds like fun. Let me go back to the guy who deceived me and tore out my heart. Yep, all sunshine and rainbows there 😉. Elea does return to Rowan but that is only because she believes that there is something happening with Rowan and she is determined to find out the truth of matter. All the truth if she has her way about it.
The truth shall set you free and in this case, it certainly did that for Elea. As she started putting bits and pieces together she started to realize that what she thought was fact was actually fiction. Whoopsie! She should have listened to Rowan when he was trying to explain things. Now Elea might not have all the details but she knows enough to understand that she is going to have to trust in Rowan as others in her life start to show their true colors.
This is the kind of series installment that you wait for, the one where all the “whys” are explained. It is also where there is betrayal and great reveals. Not all characters were as they seemed and that upset me for Elea. How could she trust herself when it seemed that most everyone she had placed her faith in was not worthy.
There were some serious twists in this story and it kept the story moving along. There is plenty of action, and magical battles that I loved. Different types of magic warring together, yes please. Ok, I bet you are wondering about the romance. It is very sweet and will warm your heart, it is not steamy or graphic. This story is really about the healing hearts, magical fighting, and Elea finally choosing her own path.
I love the ending! I love it so much. Granted that I have not been invested in the first two books but from gleaning what I did from this book I am really happy for these characters. It is not a happily ever after as there is still some story left to play out but it is happily ever for now. I think this is a book and a series that can be enjoyed by fans of young adult fantasy.
