February 2017 Wrap-Up and Mini-Reviews

Posted February 28, 2017 by Minx

Ok, so I dropped the ball and I did not have time to complete a February 2017 TBR post. So we will start with my TBR shelf at the start of February:

February 2017 TBR Shelf The Genre Minx Book Reviews

Yeah it was a bit overflowing. So for the month of February I worked on making room on this shelf. Now I will be honest I removed Passenger and Wayfarer by Alexandra Bracken because I tried to read Passenger and did not finish it. Yes, a big ol’ DNF for that book. I will include a mini-review for why I didn’t finish it below. I then of course removed Wayfarer from my TBR shelf. I have read the Darkest Minds by her as well and I was not thrilled with that book. So I am going to have to declare myself not a fan of her writing, which is too bad because she is really popular.

Now off this shelf I have read the following books:

Passenger by Alexandra Bracken2 stars! I tried, I bought this book and I tried so hard to like it. I just couldn’t finish this book. With so many other books on my TBR I just decided to set this one aside and maybe try again at another time.

Why? I know I am probably not giving this book a fair shake but here it is. The first 100 pages were so slow. I did not find enough of interest with the main characters to continue. Nothing engaged me enough to finish. Maybe at another time. The writing that I did read was well done and for that – 2 stars.

A Torch Against The Night by Sabaa Tahir3 stars and all I had to say about this story was:I really wanted to love this installment in the series but I only liked it. I know it’s a lame review but honestly I don’t have more than that to give. The writing from this author is amazing but it was the story that was ‘meh’ for me, I hardly remember it now. It just wasn’t memorable for me and the ending was sigh. Trust me I know I am in the minority here but there it is.

Stalking Jack the Ripper by Kerri Maniscalco4 stars! I have been waiting forever to have a chance to read this book and it was worth the wait! I though that Audrey Rose was a delightful character. She was clearly stuck between two worlds and I felt that the story expressed that well. I would have lost my mind back in those days.

The build up around Jack the Ripper was interesting enough. It is hard to really come up with something new in regards those crimes but the details about the scenes were graphic. It almost felt as if I could have seen it myself. Yuck. Yeah, this book is filled with lots of gruesome details. There are also some pictures included to really send home the point. Nice.

Thomas’s character was just smashing. I wanted so much more of him. I also wanted to know if his attraction to her was due to her intelligence or was it that he had been admiring her for some time? He seemed instantly smitten to me. Regardless, his interactions with Audrey were delightful and added just the right amount of “romance” to an otherwise gruesome story.

Now the mystery around Saucy Jack was interesting but I will admit I knew who the guilty party was early on in the story. Well I won’t say I was absolutely certain BUT I was highly, highly suspicious. Overall it was a fast-paced, action-filled delight to the senses and I cannot wait for the next installment! I highly recommend!!

Odessa Sea by Clive Cussler4 stars! I am a huge fan of Clive Cussler’s and his various co-author’s work. I don’t really “review” his work too often because I am totally partial to this series. Also, he turns out three books per year and it would get boring to read a review that is just about the same every time because his series are very formulaic. Damn Minx! Doesn’t sound like you are a fan at all.?? Can’t help it, love every book and I cannot be impartial to these books. I am aware that they follow a formula and don’t change that much. I do enjoy when new co-author’s come in to a series though because it always adds something fresh to the story. 🙂

Eleventh Grave in the Moonlight by Darynda Jones4 Stars! I have read and enjoyed every single Charley Davidson book thus far. This one of course was no exception. I always enjoy the characters and their antics. Charley’s character is basically the same as she was from book one. She understands things better now but she is still the same. There has been no real profound development. I think this series is absolutely entertaining but I guess that I wanted more from the characters now. They are always keeping secrets from each other. Landing in hot water and some dire situations but it is the same book after book.

I will continue to read and collect this series but I am thinking that that glitter of it all is rubbing off for me. I just wanted more. There are far too few books that can make me laugh like this series can. 🙂
