I reviewed a box set of three stories by Author Tiffany Shand. Below I have written a mini-review for each story in the series and given an individual rating per book.
Overall I found that there were several aspects to this series that I enjoyed and some that I was meh about. What would have really hit the mark for me was being able to develop an emotional connection to the characters, more detailed world building, and a better understanding of the magical part of this world. A very entertaining read though from start to finish though and definitely worth checking out.
Betrayed by Blood by Tiffany Shand (3 stars)
In a city of lies and deception, only one thing stands between chaos and justice. For centuries, a band of outlaws called the Amaranthine has kept the peace in Ormere and hidden in plain sight whilst the Order of Sorcerers spreads their deadly magic among the city’s inhabitants.
After losing her fiancé in bust gone wrong, Amaranthine Agent Kaylan Avilion returns home to discover that Elijah didn’t die but instead was changed by the twisted guards of the Order, who seek to find a dangerous artefact tied to Kaylan’s past and the murder of her family. When her sister goes missing and a foe from their past remerges, Kaylan knows she must save Freya before she’s poisoned by the very people who took Elijah away from her. But how will Kaylan react when she learns Elijah’s secret and can they come together to stop the Order’s plan in time?
This story is the first in a short collection called the Amaranthine Chronicles. The story revolves around Kaylan Avilion and her family. Her father had been involved in the Amaranthine order before he was betrayed and killed. After his death, the order was decimated with the exception of a small rogue portion. This story starts out with a group infiltrating the lair of a wizard who they believe is responsible for making an illegal drug that is affecting the magical community. There is treachery afoot though and the group enters into a trap that has severe consequences.
While reading this book and the series the thought crossed my mind that this could be turned into a great Manga anime. There is plenty of action, angst, betrayal and friendship woven throughout this plot. I loved that are shape-shifters, evil henchwomen, and sorcery but the draw back for me was that there is not enough fleshing out of characters or deep world development. There were elements in this story that absolutely grabbed my interest such as teleportation, shape-shifting, and the ability to fly. Loved all of that! There is definitely a good versus evil vibe going on in this story.
What I felt was slightly off for me was the emotions between Kaylan and Elijah. The words were there between them but I did not feel the connection. The emotional element in this story between all characters just felt a bit flat. I wanted to have that emotional pull that would really have me cheering for the characters of this book. It was an enjoyable story and will keep your interest from start to finish.
Dark Revenge by Tiffany Shand (3.5 stars)
Darkness is sweeping through the city of Ormere as unnatural creatures stalk through the streets. People are dying and time is running out as a new evil threatens to take control of everything. The Amaranthine Order has been decimated leaving only a few of its people left to fight the coming terror.
Stunned by her sister Freya’s betrayal and plot to take over the city, Kaylan must do everything she can to find out what Freya plans to do when she finds an infamous book linked to the murder of their family. A book considered so dangerous that the last High Lord erased its location from history, the Amaranthine Chronicles are said to contain the darkest of all magics.
Kaylan is happy to finally have her ex-fiancé, Elijah, back in her life but he’s not the man she once knew and loved. After being turned into a shapeshifter, Elijah struggles to control his inner beast and his lingering feelings for Kaylan.
Can Elijah and Kaylan come together to stop Freya and uncover the secrets of the book before it’s too late?
The plot thickens in this story. The team has found out that Ena and Freya have been using a long game strategy for taking over the city and that their plans are more sinister than imaginable. There are revelations that come in this story that are pretty major and unexpected. Kaylan and Elijah have a tenuous partnership going on but Elijah is still insistent that they are not able to have a relationship.
There is a nice mystery element to this story. Where are the Amaranthine chronicles? I think that the Author does a good job with the past to present time transitions. I especially enjoyed where the main protagonists are brought back to the past by magical means in an effort to find out where the book is. Freya’s character is growing more heinous with every passing chapter. The action is great with the addition of more shape-shifters and the fight scenes are entertaining.
There is deeper character development happening in this story. Still lacking as far as the world development though. There are still many unanswered questions to the world they are inhabiting. The emotional element of the story is starting to flesh out. The connection that the Author is trying to build between Kaylan and Elijah is starting to show through. If you are looking for a real romantic element I would not suggest this series though. This is more for fans of fantasy who enjoy fighting and a really good versus evil plot.
The Final Battle by Tiffany Shand (4 stars)
Darkness has claimed the city of Ormere and death has become a certainty for anyone stalking its empty streets. The government is in ruins and lawlessness ensues.
After their last encounter, Kaylan and Elijah barely managed to thwart her sister, Freya’s, latest attempts to find and use the elusive Amaranthine Chronicles. But in her desperation to receive ultimate power, Freya will stop at nothing to get what she wants. Even if it means destroying the last of her family.
Kaylan and Elijah must work on their fragile relationship and put their personal feelings aside to find the book and stop Freya before it’s too late. But with their allies growing thin, and a gang of ruthless shapeshifters close on their trail, will they finally find the book and stop Freya before time runs out? And will Kaylan have to make the ultimate sacrifice to save her city and the man she loves?
This story is the third in a short-story collection called the Amaranthine Chronicles. In order to really appreciate this series, it should be read in order. So wow, by the time you get to the final battle you are going to be hating Freya! Damn, as a sister goes she just sucks! She makes a great villain though and her long game plan was quite brilliant. Too bad that she has veered into slight madness due to her desperation to retrieve the chronicles by this point.
There were a few twists and turns in every story so far and this one was no exception. By the end there was a nice wrap up to many of the threads throughout this story. In addition, there was a satisfying HEA with Elijah and Kaylan but their relationship was shaky right up until the end. The ending battle was not how you would have expected it to go but very entertaining. I enjoyed that the Author kept most scenes from becoming predictable. You may have been able to predict the outcome but not the means on how the Author takes you there. An entertaining series with non-stop action, some suspense and a little paranormal romance thrown in for good measure.
