Kit Foster thought a week in the woods would be the perfect way to recover from the family scandal that shattered her world. No reporters, no gossip and no drama. Then a helicopter dumps an injured man in her path.
Mick Harris is having a bad day. It was bad enough that he botched an op, but then he awakes beaten and left for dead in the middle of a forest. He is lucky to be alive, but now he is at the mercy of Kit- the only person who knows the route home.
During the time it takes to hike back to civilization, Kit and Mick become friends and explore their growing attraction. While the way out is hampered by bad memories and an assassin, they manage to grow close enough to attempt a real relationship.
However, that bliss is short-lived when Mick’s job again threatens Kit’s life and destroys their happiness. Can a second chance bring them back together?
Broken Bits is Book 1 of the DAG Team Series
Action-packed, engaging, and romantic! I adored this debut novel! What first snagged my interest was not just the book but the Author’s website. Are you wondering why? When I decide to review a book I take many factors into consideration and I always check websites. When I went to Ms. O’Connor’s website I was immediately in love with the fact that she had bios for the members of Data Acquisitions Group (DAG) and it grabbed my interest right away! Then I received the book and I was over the moon that I loved the story.
What this story is about in a nutshell (hmmmm, maybe walnut shell) is that Kit and Mick start as strangers and sparks start to fly. There is a danger that surrounds them and the situation comes to a head. The ground work is laid for the introduction to the DAG team and you will meet the characters. This part is great. I already have my favorites and one that I feel should be kicked off the island.
Kit Foster is an awesome character. She is witty, compassionate and a wee bit naughty. I love that she is not a pushover. When she first comes upon Mick she does not act like she is a female in heat who has lost all her reasoning skills. She recognizes that he is a strange man and they are in the middle of a woods. She feels compelled to help him because come on he was dropped out of a helicopter and needs medical attention so she ties him up so that he can’t grab her in case he is a bad guy. WOW! She uses her brain and is not so in lust that she runs to the poor man without a thought to her safety. Yay! You go girl, use your common sense. Kit continues to mistrust Mick and take precautions to ensure her safety even though she does find him attractive. As she gets to know him things start to get hot between them and it just grows from there. Love It!
Mick Harris is an operative with DAG who has seen some hard times. His character is written as an attractive guy but when you learn of his background you will see that he has his share of demons and weaknesses. I enjoyed that his character went through a horrific experience and actually has issues. Not just some male bravado that “it happened and I squished it down so that I can be dark and unreachable.” Do not get me wrong though his character is sexy, smart and funny, not a simpering whiner that is stuck in a bad place.
The character development builds over the course of the story between Kit and Mick which I enjoyed because it just enhanced the romance the more emotionally invested I became. Luckily this is more than just a romance though, plenty of action, danger, and sinister bad guys. There is a plot twist that is actually quite disturbing and the effects from it are devastating! Wait, there is more! Suspense, yes there is also suspense. Several times I was guessing at what happened, just waiting to find out to see if I was correct in my assumptions. Definitely kept me on my toes.
Was there anything that I wish was different? I liked getting to know the DAG characters that were introduced, they were an integral part to the plot at that time but when it came time to “exit stage right” they were lightly explained away. There were also a couple of times that something significant took place and I was waiting to find out how the character was going to react to it but the fall-out or explanation took a while to come around and I was like “oh, that is how they felt or that is what took place.” Some of it was due to holding the suspense but I felt that the reaction could have been shown to us the readers and then brought up later for discussion between characters.
I am pumped to read the next installment in this series. There is plenty of action and sexy times but the romance is sweet and hot. There is a whole plethora of emotions experienced throughout this novel and it is a fabulous debut novel. I strongly encourage you to seek this book out! It is a great read!
