Catalia "Cat" Fisa is a powerful clairvoyant known as the Kingmaker. This smart-mouthed soothsayer has no interest in her powers and would much rather fly under the radar, far from the clutches of her homicidal mother. But when an ambitious warlord captures her, she may not have a choice…
Griffin is intent on bringing peace to his newly conquered realm in the magic-deprived south. When he discovers Cat is the Kingmaker, he abducts her. But Cat will do everything in her power to avoid her dangerous destiny and battle her captor at every turn. Although up for the battle, Griffin would prefer for Cat to help his people willingly, and he's ready to do whatever it takes to coax her…even if that means falling in love with her.
Smoldering romantic fantasy with a story to match! This story grabbed me from the start and I read it in one sitting. It is a fantasy that includes a traveling circus, magicians, warlords, romance, sexy times, combat, and powers given by the Olympian gods themselves. Such a good read! Honestly, the fact that I have to wait until January 2017 for the next in the series….this:
So why does this book get five stars from me 🤔? After I read this book I stared at it in complete denial that my time with Cat, Griffin, Cato, Flynn and Carver was over and I immediately wanted to read it again. Now I am writing this review three days later and the book is still on my mind, it is taking all my will power not to read it again because I have more books I need to read! I am a fan of this book for life. Soooo good. Ok, I need to actually write a review instead of fan-girling all over.
This story takes place in Sintan. Our heroine Catalia “Cat” Fisa has been working at a traveling circus for the past eight years. She is a soothsayer and her act is to tell the future but what she really is the Kingmaker, a powerful clairvoyant that can divine if anyone is lying. A kingmaker is born only every two hundred years and they are sought after and fought over. Cat has been in hiding and lying about who she is and what powers she possesses ever since she escaped from Fisa, a wretched place filled with powerful magic and an equally powerful Alpha bent on returning Cat to the domain.
“You are either born with magic or you aren’t. Magoi or Hoi Polloi.”
The people are divided into two different classes. Magoi are the people who are born with magic, like Cat. Or Hoi Polloi which are people born without magic like Beta Sinta, aka Griffin. He is a conquering warlord that has just done the unimaginable. He has put his sister on the Sintan throne through defeating the previous royal family’s magic. Un-heard-of in this fantasy setting, so to say that he has some street cred would be putting it mildly. You can imagine how uncomfortable Cat, a kingmaker, was when he showed up at the circus with his focus on her. Like a dingo watching a baby!
“I throw him a saucy look. “You think I’m that easy to kill?” Relief floods his face. He grins, and a tiny lightning bolt zings down my spine. “She’s the one,” he announces to his men. “I want her.””
Griffin did not ask nicely for Cat to come with him and she was not interested in the deal either, but he had come prepared. Through the use of an enchanted rope that only he can untie, he abducted Cat. Well isn’t that a pickle. Cat cannot use her magical skills to get away and must leave with him otherwise he will arrest her friends at the circus. What’s a girl to do? So, he got what he came for and to say that Cat hates him is an understatement. I love the snarky banter between Cat and Griffin! It is sooo good! She really goes out of her way to make him miserable but she also see’s that he is not the caveman that he first seemed and that has her rankled.
“By noon, the sun is high and hot, beating down on my dark hair and crimson-clad back. My leather pants are officially one of the worst things in my life right now, and that’s saying a lot. I still manage to go back to sleep. I haven’t slept like this in years, maybe in my entire life. I may be strapped to a man I hate, but he would probably do a lot to keep me alive. He might even be good at it. Ironically, I feel almost safe.”
Traveling with Griffin is Carver, Cato and Flynn; together they make up team Beta. You will love these characters. They are just so well written and hilarious. They lend so much comedy to the story. From the start they are like big brothers to Cat, who would rather spit in their eye than accept their friendship but that does not stop them from looking out for her. What follows is the group traveling to bring Cat to Alpha Sinta, Griffin’s sister. Griffin’s desire is that Cat would work with his sister to secure her throne. Unfortunately for him Cat does not appreciate being abducted, hard to believe right, and she is not going to make any of this easy on him or his team.
This story has it all! If you are looking for action and adventure, check, skirmishes, check, magic use, check, witty banter, check, an actual story plot that is not focused on just sex, check, then you will have nothing to complain about with this story and will not be disappointed in the least.
There is some sexy times but let’s not forget the smoldering romance. Sm-ol-der-ing romance! So wonderful! It is hard to write smoldering romance in such a way that it, oh I don’t know, actually smolders but Amanda Bouchet nailed it! Such a good read.
