Drothe has been a member of the Kin for years, rubbing elbows with thieves and murderers in the employ of a crime lord while smuggling relics on the side. But when an ancient book falls into his hands, Drothe finds himself in possession of a relic capable of bringing down emperors-a relic everyone in the underworld would kill to obtain.
This book has been listed as fast paced and action packed but I barely finished it. The main character Drothe is an anti-hero but he is portrayed in a way that he “walks” the line between good and bad. Make him good or make him evil, it detracts from the storyline and the over all book if we can’t decide if we like him or hate him.
I usually have no issues with a first person narrative but in this case it really detracted from the story and the supporting characters. Drothe and his inner monologues are really all about himself and his part in the over all storyline. It led to awkward moments of dialogue and confusion with plot twists. When we encounter a new character he will explain that person’s main role in the story but really stops at that. Then it comes back to him and all the many cons he is running and for me that made it boring. I want depth and connection with the main players.
The storyline itself is convoluted and fails at the small details that support the overall story. The currency – ducks, owls etc, seriously what does it equate to? If I don’t understand the significance then how can it matter to me?! Drothe is supposed to be a thief, no special super hero skills…so going without sleep for days and being functional is not even realistic among other things. If he is going to be able to do above average things, then give him a backstory or skills to explain it. In a story the little things build up to support the over all plot twists and turns, they will make the unbelievable believable.
Overall, I will say that the tale had a lot of potential. It is filled with many characters with interesting job descriptions: arm, nose, ear etc. Action, sword fights, magic and politics just to make it intriguing. Maybe you will see if differently and you would be in the majority because overall the fans have rated this book very highly. For me….this:
