“Helena shifted her gaze to the glossy red wax seal stamped upon the rolled parchment and brushed a trembling finger across the intricate design. Had her plan been discovered? She drew in a deep breath and opened the scroll. Three words greeted her: It is done.”
Adelaide Miller is a photographer with a past she would soon rather forget. She has bet it all on a gig that lands her on English soil. A near vehicular collision occurs and Adelaide finds herself in an alternate universe that is beyond her comprehension. Down a proverbial rabbit hole, Adelaide is confronted with a reality that she finds she must choose to accept or deny.
Prince Zayne Godfrey, heir apparent to kingdom of Edana, is betrothed to the Princess of Forath in order to secure peace between their rival kingdoms.
While hunting deer in his soon to be in-laws forest he hears something unexpected, a woman screaming in fear. Upon investigation, at the very sight of the damsel in distress, he finds himself immersed in a sensation so foreign to him that he loses all self-control and transforms into his dragon form.
A modern woman transported to a medieval dimension that is beyond believable with its wizards and shape-shifting men. A man in the grip of an untenable marriage arrangement and shackled by his sense of duty. Together, can they discover the truth about the burning passion they have become a slave to? To explore that passion could cause the demise for the two kingdoms on the brink of war. It could also be the catalyst that leads to the truth that can set them free.
The first book in the Kingdoms of Fire and Ice series is a fairy tale told in an honest voice with flawed characters. I will say that it is definitely an ‘R’ rated fairy tale, so know that going in :D. Bringing the real world to the fantasy was fairly well done. I say fairly well because I found myself pondering the reality of what the author was writing instead of being so caught up that the story was just reality for me. The prince is portrayed, as you would expect a real prince to be, not some chaste ken doll waiting for his true love. I love how the story shows you his nature and yet there is something about his finding Adelaide that makes this situation a bit different. Adelaide as a character is adorable. She is a loner with a lifetime of hurt that is used to being let down but she is not broken. I wish that we had been able to know her background a little better. The parts we do see are sad and help a little to know her but as a main character I felt that the emotional connection I had with her was at a sub-character level.
I will say though, all the characters have dimension and play an important part in the overall story. It is a fantasy with magic, suspense, mystery, betrayal, sweet and wicked sex oh yeah a little romance too, wink, wink and has many surprise twists. There are also openings that would allow for deeper backstories on the characters, which I will admit that I am curious to know. The story itself is really wonderful and very different and you will not be disappointed if you read because it has it all! Also, have you seen the cover? Damn! Right?? Love it!
