A mining town empty.
One survivor swings in a cage, waiting to die.
Ferran’s tattoos burn as horrors near. They should run. They should seek help. But to save a few, they must journey deeper into the heart of the nightmare to face an ancient foe.
“She shut her eyes as they dragged the screaming man back into the mine. Then all was silent. The woman didn’t cry. She just sat still and waited for her turn to die.”
In the second novella of the “Rend the Dark” series, which is part of the “Echoes of the Ascended” series, Riffolk, Ferran and Mireia travel deeper into the northern wilderness in search of the newest Ruin (ancient demons). Driven by Mireia’s visions, more akin to sensations of the ruins evil, the trio is led to an illegal mining town that by all appearances has been abandoned. Until they stumble upon the crow cage, the occupant enclosed within tells a horrific story of monsters, evil and gore. Now they know, the settlement is indeed occupied and they must engage the sinister occupants.
Ancient demon, twisted creatures and skin flaying, yes this story is a fantasy filled with horror, gore, and even loyalty. This story is told through the eyes of Riffolk, who is filled with self-doubt. He is terrified of what’s to come and Mireia’s visions are only increasing his anxiety. Ferran is as stoic as ever and you learn more about the order’s tattoos, which is an interesting story. The supporting characters in this novella add depth to the overall story. The Ruin featured is “wow!” on the evil factor and a little stomach turning as well. It is quite the ride, if you are daring enough.
